Block the gesture before the fingers

Draw the palm as a flexible box, attach a thumb wedge, then use one line to state the direction of the grouped fingers. This keeps the hand readable before individual digits create clutter.

Build fingers as tapered segments

Place the knuckle rhythm across the palm, then construct each finger from simple tapered sections. Let the middle finger set the overall reach and compare the others against it rather than measuring each in isolation.

  • Show the knuckle arc
  • Taper toward the fingertips
  • Keep joint bends consistent with the gesture

Use overlap for foreshortening

When a hand points toward the viewer, overlapping palm and finger shapes explain depth better than drawing every segment at full length. Start with the nearest large shape and reveal only the portions visible behind it.

Practice functional hand poses

Rotate a small set of practical gestures instead of repeating one open hand. Check the silhouette, thumb side and contact points after every sketch.

  • Relaxed open hand
  • Holding a cup
  • Pointing
  • Loose fist
  • Supporting weight
  • Reaching toward the viewer
