Character overview

Who is Reigen Arataka?

Reigen Arataka is a self-proclaimed psychic with no supernatural power, relying on conversation, observation and Mob while offering advice that is often more ethically useful than his business practices suggest.

Reigen is a fraud in the literal sense: he advertises powers he does not possess and delegates genuine supernatural danger to a child. The series does not erase that exploitation, but it also refuses to make supernatural ability the only form of competence that matters.

His strongest guidance tells Mob that psychic power does not make anyone more human or more entitled to dominate. Reigen can recognise manipulation, calm frightened clients and improvise in social situations where raw force would make the problem worse.

Power system

Abilities, powers and limitations

Abilities

  • Persuasive communication
  • Rapid social assessment
  • Client counselling
  • Crisis improvisation

Limits

  • He has no psychic powers despite marketing himself as a psychic.
  • Dishonesty makes genuine care difficult for Mob and others to evaluate.
  • Reliance on performance can prevent him from admitting loneliness or professional failure.

Character connections

Important relationships

  • Mob is employee, student and the person whose trust forces Reigen to confront the consequences of pretending.
  • Dimple recognises the fraud immediately and becomes a sceptical countervoice to Reigen's confidence.
  • Serizawa gives Reigen an opportunity to turn improvised mentorship into more responsible employment and support.

Story progression

Defining moments

  • Telling Mob that psychic power does not make him superior establishes the real value inside a dishonest mentorship.
  • Walking into a confrontation without supernatural ability demonstrates how confidence and social framing can interrupt violence.
  • Losing public credibility exposes the difference between attracting attention and sustaining an honest relationship.

Visual language

Symbolism and visual design

The plain business suit presents adult authority as something performed rather than guaranteed by special power.

Improvised named techniques parody supernatural spectacle while highlighting mundane skills that still solve real client problems.

Adaptation notes

Manga versus anime

The anime uses elastic character animation and typography to turn Reigen's improvised techniques into visual comedy.

Takahiro Sakurai's performance moves quickly between salesmanship, panic and sincere advice without removing the tension among them.
