Character overview

Who is Shigeo Kageyama?

Shigeo is an extraordinarily powerful psychic who deliberately values kindness, effort and emotional maturity over supernatural status.

Shigeo's central conflict is not how to acquire power but how to live responsibly with far more power than he wants. He distrusts the idea that psychic ability makes him superior, partly because it cannot automatically give him confidence, friendship or the ordinary growth he admires.

The series measures his progress through emotional honesty and chosen effort. Joining the Body Improvement Club matters precisely because physical training is difficult for him; it is a form of growth that cannot be solved by telekinesis.

Abilities, powers and limitations

Abilities

  • Telekinesis
  • Spirit perception
  • Psychic barriers
  • Energy absorption

Limits

  • Suppressing emotion delays conflict rather than eliminating it, creating the pressure represented by the percentage counter.
  • His reluctance to hurt others can be exploited by people who mistake restraint for weakness.
  • Psychic power cannot substitute for communication, self-knowledge or physical effort.

Character connections

Important relationships

  • Reigen begins as an unreliable mentor but also gives Shigeo language for using power without treating people as objects.
  • Ritsu's mixture of love, fear and envy forces both brothers to confront what they have avoided saying.
  • The Body Improvement Club offers acceptance based on effort and character rather than supernatural usefulness.

Story progression

Defining moments

  • His decision to join the Body Improvement Club establishes the kind of person he wants to become.
  • Confrontations with other espers repeatedly test whether overwhelming force can coexist with empathy.
  • Moments when the percentage reaches its limit externalise emotions that Shigeo has not yet learned to name safely.

Visual language

Symbolism and visual design

His deliberately plain design makes inner emotional movement more important than conventional heroic glamour.

The percentage counter turns repression into a visible dramatic system without reducing every emotional state to anger.

Adaptation notes

Manga versus anime

The anime expands the impact of psychic conflict through highly varied animation, colour and mixed-media effects.

The broad story remains closely connected to ONE's manga, while performance, timing and visual experimentation create a distinct viewing experience.
