Ichiya's comedy depends on the gap between his self-image and everyone else's reaction, but the same absolute confidence makes him reliable in a crisis. He may misunderstand how Erza sees him; he does not misunderstand that a guild leader should place himself between danger and his people.
Perfume Magic fits a character who changes atmosphere rather than dominating through one destructive element. Healing, strength and sensory effects let Ichiya improve what a team can do, while Christina expands that support from personal magic to shared infrastructure.
Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki is a leading Blue Pegasus mage, commander of the Trimens and a specialist in Perfume Magic. He joins Fairy Tail, Lamia Scale and Cait Shelter in the alliance formed against Oración Seis and Nirvana. Although his exaggerated poses, obsession with beauty and repeated declarations toward Erza make him an easy comic target, Ichiya carries medicinal, strengthening and sensory perfumes that support entire teams. He later competes in the Grand Magic Games, commands Blue Pegasus's flying ship Christina and gives Laxus and the Thunder God Tribe a place in Blue Pegasus after Fairy Tail disbands. During the Alvarez war and the final battle with Acnologia, Christina becomes vital transport. Ichiya pilots the ship with Anna Heartfilia and deliberately drives it into the Black Dragon to force Acnologia toward the space between time.
