Profile overview
Zeref's tragedy begins with refusal to accept one death, but centuries of consequences turn grief into entitlement over everyone else's timeline. He can explain the loneliness behind Neo Eclipse without gaining the right to erase lives that unfolded after his loss.
The curse of contradiction externalizes emotional avoidance. Indifference gives Zeref control, while love makes his power lethal. His colder emperor persona is therefore both strategy and surrender: he tries to become someone who can act without caring about the cost.
Zeref Dragneel is the legendary Black Wizard, emperor of the Alvarez Empire and the older brother of Natsu Dragneel. After losing his family, including Natsu, Zeref studies forbidden magic in an attempt to restore his brother and is cursed by the god Ankhseram for violating the boundary between life and death. The curse makes him immortal and releases uncontrolled death magic whenever he values life. Zeref creates the Etherious demons in hopes that one of them can kill him; his greatest creation is E.N.D., the revived Natsu. He later teaches Mavis magic, falls in love with her and unintentionally places her in a deathlike state. As Emperor Spriggan, he forms the Spriggan 12 and invades Ishgar to seize Fairy Heart for Neo Eclipse, a plan to return to the past and prevent the ruined history he helped create.

Symbolism and visual design
Black and white clothing reflects the alternating gentleness and lethal detachment produced by the curse.
Books turn living beings into authored tools, making Zeref's control over stories and bodies literal.
Immortality reverses the usual heroic wish for survival and becomes the prison from which every scheme begins.
Neo Eclipse represents revision without accountability: a perfect new draft purchased by deleting everyone in the current one.
Manga-versus-anime differences
The manga reveals Zeref in stages: cursed wanderer, creator of the Etherious, Natsu's brother and finally Emperor Spriggan seeking Fairy Heart.
The anime preserves those revelations and expands the atmosphere surrounding his encounters, imperial role and final confrontation. Official episode material identifies the curse's contradiction and Neo Eclipse directly. Akira Ishida voices Zeref in Japanese.
