Character study
Personality and motivation

- Confident that Zeref's creations exist to complete their author's death wish
Power system
Abilities, powers and limitations
Abilities
- Thorn Curse that generates and directs vast masses of piercing vines
- Memento Mori, a curse intended to erase a target beyond ordinary life and death
- Alegria, which fuses with Cube and absorbs nearly everyone inside its living structure
- Etherious Form that greatly increases speed, strength, durability and curse power
- Regeneration and resilience characteristic of a high-level Etherious demon
- Control over Cube and command of Tartaros's Nine Demon Gates
Limits
- Devil Slayer Magic is specifically effective against Mard Geer's demonic body and disrupts his regeneration.
- Alegria does not permanently contain Lucy, whose escape enables the Celestial Spirit King's intervention.
- Memento Mori fails to settle the battle against opponents whose unusual natures and combined resistance complicate its intended effect.
- Mard Geer's confidence in E.N.D. prevents him from understanding the full identity and choices of the person linked to that book.
- As an Etherious created by Zeref, his existence remains vulnerable to his creator's direct control over the book.
Character connections
Important relationships
- Zeref Dragneel creates Mard Geer and ultimately decides that the demon who claims to serve his purpose has failed.
- E.N.D. is Tartaros's nominal master and the book Mard Geer protects in hopes of awakening Zeref's strongest demon.
- Natsu Dragneel fights Mard Geer without initially knowing his own connection to E.N.D.
- Gray Fullbuster arrives with Devil Slayer Magic inherited from Silver and delivers the attack that ends Mard Geer's resistance.
- Kyôka acts as Tartaros's operational commander while Mard Geer remains the guild's ruling authority.
- The Celestial Spirit King answers Lucy's sacrifice and forces Mard Geer into a battle large enough to expose Cube.
Story progression
Defining moments
- Ordering Tartaros's attack on the Magic Council begins a campaign designed to remove every seal and obstacle around Face.
- Revealing himself as the Underworld King establishes that the guild's apparent hierarchy has concealed its true ruler.
- Using Alegria turns the headquarters itself into a curse and leaves Lucy carrying the burden of escape.
- Battling the Celestial Spirit King gives the Tartaros conflict a confrontation between two rulers of supernatural realms.
- Entering Etherious Form pushes Natsu and Gray to combine destructive force with magic specialized against demons.
- Being returned to his book and burned by Zeref ends the servant through the authority of the creator he revered.
Visual language
Symbolism and visual design
A cultivated, princely appearance disguises a worldview that reduces every life to function.
Thorns make control visible as beauty weaponized into confinement and pain.
The book of E.N.D. represents faith in a promised master Mard Geer understands only as an instrument.
Face literalizes enforced silence: a network meant to erase the language of magic so only Tartaros's Curses can speak.
Adaptation notes
Manga versus anime
The manga reveals Tartaros's structure gradually, moving from the Nine Demon Gates and Face to Mard Geer's authority, E.N.D. and the final fight with Natsu and Gray.
The anime preserves those core events while extending several Tartaros battles and the destruction surrounding Face. The series distinguishes magic from Curses as different power systems, although both can be resisted through specific abilities and coordinated action. Toshiyuki Morikawa voices Mard Geer in Japanese.
