Profile overview
Macbeth's apparent passivity is a form of status. Brain keeps Midnight untouched while the other members expose their abilities, reinforcing the belief that his successor stands beyond ordinary opposition. Erza defeats that image by studying rules beneath spectacle rather than accepting invulnerability as a fact.
His development is deliberately quieter than the changes experienced by Erik or Richard. Macbeth does not receive a single redemptive revelation; his meaningful choice is to remain with the people Brain once organized while accepting a guild whose purpose contradicts Brain's ownership of them.
Macbeth is a survivor of the Tower of Heaven system whom Brain recruits into Oracion Seis under the codename Midnight. Often seen resting on a flying carpet while the other members fight, he is reserved as the guild's most formidable defender and as Brain's intended successor. Macbeth's Reflector magic bends incoming spells, distorts the surrounding landscape and creates illusions convincing enough to make an opponent experience injuries that have not physically occurred. Near the end of the Nirvana campaign, he defeats Jellal and confronts Erza Scarlet. Erza's artificial eye helps her see through the illusion, while attacks from multiple directions expose the operational limits of Reflector. His defeat removes the last seal suppressing Zero. After imprisonment, Macbeth is released during the Tartaros crisis with the other surviving members. Jellal defeats the group and offers them a place in Crime Sorciere, where Macbeth can work beside his former comrades without becoming another version of Brain. He later supports the alliance defending Fiore during the Alvarez invasion.

The manga introduces Midnight as the last undefeated member of Oracion Seis, centres his original conflict on Erza and later moves Macbeth into Crime Sorciere with the released dark-guild members.
The anime-original Key of the Starry Sky arc substantially expands Macbeth as Brain II, giving him a new costume, greater authority and enhanced Reflector techniques.
