Character overview

Who is Wally Buchanan?

Wally Buchanan is Richard Buchanan's younger brother and one of the children enslaved to build the Tower of Heaven. He grows up beside Erza, Jellal, Simon, Sho and Millianna, but the failed revolt divides the group. After Jellal destroys the escape ship and blames Erza, Wally remains at the tower for eight years believing that Erza betrayed them. When the completed tower requires her return, Wally helps abduct Erza and attacks Natsu's rescue party. His Polygon Magic separates his squared body into independent blocks, while his gun and knowledge of Natsu's motion sickness let him turn a moving vehicle into an effective trap. Simon's revelation and Jellal's willingness to sacrifice everyone eventually expose the deception. After the tower falls, Wally declines Erza's invitation to join Fairy Tail and travels with Sho and Millianna to experience the world that captivity denied them. His brother Richard continues searching for him, making their eventual reunion the personal horizon behind both men's stories.

Wally's angular design suggests a person assembled from pieces, an apt image for someone whose childhood history has been deliberately rearranged by Jellal. Learning the truth does not instantly supply a new identity, so travel becomes a way to build one through direct experience.

His conflict with Natsu mixes comedy and real tactical intelligence. Wally understands that a stronger opponent can still be controlled through an environmental weakness, but the same strategy mirrors Jellal's rule: winning by deciding what another person is allowed to perceive.

Complete character analysis

Story, powers and development

Story spoilers ahead

The spoiler-safe introduction appears above. The sections below connect personality and abilities to relationships, defining moments, adaptation choices and current status.

Character study

Personality and motivation

  • Energetic and theatrical in combat
  • Protective of fellow Tower survivors
  • Initially bitter toward Erza
  • Clever about exploiting unusual weaknesses
  • Curious about the world beyond captivity

Power system

Abilities, powers and limitations

Abilities

  • Polygon Magic that separates his body into block-like segments
  • The ability to evade conventional blows by shifting body sections away from an attack
  • Reassembly after scattering, allowing unconventional movement through narrow or dangerous spaces
  • Skilled handgun use supported by ricochets and unusual firing angles
  • Tactical use of vehicles and terrain to trigger Natsu's Dragon Slayer motion sickness
  • Close coordination with Sho and Millianna developed through years at the Tower of Heaven

Limits

  • Separated blocks can be tracked, restrained or attacked before Wally fully reassembles.
  • His gun depends on ammunition, aim and a line through which the shot can reach its target.
  • Polygon Magic improves evasion but does not make each body segment indestructible.
  • Jellal's false history keeps Wally fighting people who are trying to free him.
  • Years of isolation leave him with little knowledge of ordinary life outside the tower.

Character connections

Important relationships

  • Richard Buchanan is Wally's older brother, whose prayer as Hoteye is ultimately the wish to find him again.
  • Erza Scarlet is a childhood friend whom Wally wrongly believes abandoned the tower before learning Jellal engineered the betrayal.
  • Sho is Wally's travelling companion and fellow survivor after the Tower of Heaven collapses.
  • Millianna shares Wally's captivity, anger toward Erza and later decision to discover the outside world.
  • Simon understands Jellal's deception earlier than Wally and risks himself to guide the rescue from within.
  • Natsu Dragneel is the opponent Wally controls through motion sickness before the tower's truth changes the conflict.

Story progression

Defining moments

  • Surviving the tower's forced labour with the other children makes their small group Wally's first dependable world.
  • Accepting the story that Erza betrayed them shows how a destroyed escape route becomes a destroyed relationship.
  • Using a vehicle against Natsu proves that Wally can win exchanges through observation rather than raw magical force.
  • Learning Jellal intends to sacrifice the tower's residents collapses the purpose behind eight years of obedience.
  • Refusing immediate membership in Fairy Tail protects his right to choose a life after captivity.
  • Leaving with Sho and Millianna turns travel into an education no captor or manipulator can curate for him.

Visual language

Symbolism and visual design

A body made of squares reflects a life divided into pieces by separation, captivity and false memory.

Gunfighter styling borrows the imagery of open frontiers while Wally spends most of his youth trapped on one island.

Ricocheted shots echo the indirect path by which Jellal's lies return harm to former friends.

Travel after the tower replaces the fixed geometry of his prison with a world whose shape he can discover himself.

Adaptation notes

Manga versus anime

The manga uses Wally as both a tactical opponent in the rescue game and a survivor whose departure with Sho and Millianna keeps recovery from becoming automatic Fairy Tail membership.

The anime expands the group's childhood interactions and the comedy of Wally's gunfighter presentation while preserving his family connection to Hoteye. Official Kodansha guides frame the Tower of Heaven companions as former slaves manipulated into returning Erza, and the licensed episode guide marks their anime introduction. Kazuya Ichijo voices Wally in Japanese.
