Profile overview

Simon demonstrates that apparent collaboration under captivity is not the same as belief. He survives inside Jellal's system by withholding trust, reading the risks and waiting until resistance can protect more than himself.

His love for Erza is never treated as a claim over her. The decisive expression of that love is protective and costly, while his earlier help gives her the information needed to choose her own response to Jellal.

Simon is Kagura Mikazuchi's older brother and one of the children abducted into forced labour at the Tower of Heaven. He grows close to Erza, Jellal, Sho, Wally, Millianna and Rob during captivity, and quietly loves Erza. When the revolt fails and Jellal claims Erza destroyed the escape ship, Simon doubts the story. He remains at the tower because open resistance would endanger the other children and spends years waiting for a chance to oppose Jellal from within. When Erza returns with Fairy Tail, Simon reveals the truth, helps Natsu's group navigate the tower and uses Darkness Magic to conceal allies from the enemy. He understands that Jellal's game intends to kill every participant, not liberate them. During the final confrontation, Simon places himself between Jellal's attack and Erza. The wound is fatal, but his choice gives Erza and Natsu the chance to continue. Years later Kagura's anger toward Jellal and Millianna's grief both preserve the consequences of Simon's death.

Personality and motivation

  • Quietly observant and difficult to deceive
  • Protective of the younger tower survivors
  • Patient enough to resist from within
  • Honest about danger once action becomes possible
  • Self-sacrificing in defence of Erza

Abilities, powers and limitations

Abilities

  • Darkness Magic that creates broad fields of obscuring shadow
  • Concealment of allies, movement and magical signatures inside darkness
  • Dark blasts used to interrupt pursuers and control visibility
  • Strong physical endurance developed through years of forced labour
  • Detailed knowledge of the Tower of Heaven's passages, guards and weaknesses
  • Strategic coordination that lets the rescue party move while Jellal believes Simon remains obedient

Limits

  • Darkness hides people but does not make them invulnerable to wide-area attacks.
  • Powerful light or indiscriminate destruction can remove the tactical value of concealment.
  • Simon cannot expose Jellal too early without risking Sho, Wally and Millianna.
  • His protective instincts place his own body between danger and another person.
  • He lacks the raw power to defeat Jellal directly once the confrontation becomes open.

Aliases

Kagura Mikazuchi's older brother, Tower of Heaven survivor, Darkness mage, Erza's childhood friend

Role

Tower of Heaven survivor who recognizes Jellal's deception, hides resistance inside apparent obedience and sacrifices himself protecting Erza from the man their childhood once trusted

Important relationships

  • Erza Scarlet is Simon's childhood friend and unspoken love, whom he trusts despite Jellal's story of betrayal.
  • Kagura Mikazuchi is Simon's younger sister, whose later pursuit of Jellal grows from learning how her brother died.
  • Jellal Fernandes changes from fellow captive to manipulative ruler and ultimately kills Simon while targeting Erza.
  • Sho depends on Simon's revelation to understand that Erza never abandoned the tower group.
  • Wally Buchanan remains one of the companions Simon protects by delaying open resistance.
  • Millianna carries grief for Simon into Mermaid Heel and the Grand Magic Games confrontation with Jellal's past.

Defining moments

  • Doubting the destroyed-ship story prevents Jellal from fully owning the tower survivors' shared history.
  • Allowing the others to think he remains loyal preserves Simon's ability to help when Erza returns.
  • Telling Sho the truth breaks the emotional mechanism Jellal uses to turn family against Erza.
  • Guiding Fairy Tail through the tower transforms years of coerced knowledge into resistance.
  • Standing between Jellal's attack and Erza makes Simon's loyalty an action no false account can rewrite.
  • His death motivating Kagura and Millianna ensures that later forgiveness of Jellal must acknowledge a real cost.

Symbolism and visual design

Darkness becomes protective concealment rather than evil, reversing the moral assumptions attached to its appearance.

Simon's covered face and quiet presence reflect a truth kept hidden until revealing it can matter.

His large frame shields younger survivors emotionally before it literally shields Erza.

The brother Kagura seeks and the friend Erza remembers connect personal grief across two different guild families.

Manga-versus-anime differences

The manga positions Simon as the tower insider who never accepts Jellal's version of Erza's escape and makes his sacrifice the lasting human cost of the arc.

The anime expands the captives' shared childhood and Simon's restrained affection, giving his final intervention more accumulated history. Official Kodansha volumes 10 through 12 follow the forced labour, Jellal's elimination game and the Etherion endgame in which Simon acts. Yasuyuki Kase voices Simon in Japanese.
