Profile overview

Bankotsu leads through confidence and personal loyalty rather than moral purpose. He remembers promises, values the band's shared history and can inspire affection among killers, yet that closeness never changes the brutality of the work they choose. Loyalty humanises him without functioning as absolution.

His ambition is deliberately concrete. Bankotsu wants his halberd back, wants worthy fights and wants the Band of Seven restored under his command. This directness contrasts with Naraku's layers of deception, but accepting Naraku's bargain still places the band inside a plan whose true purpose Bankotsu does not control.

Bankotsu is the youngest-looking member and leader of the Band of Seven, a group of mercenaries feared for the work of a hundred soldiers. After the band is executed, Naraku revives its members with Shikon Jewel shards and employs them against his pursuers.

Personality and motivation

  • Charismatic
  • Fearless
  • Loyal to his band
  • Ruthless toward opponents

Abilities, powers and limitations

Abilities

  • Wielding the enormous halberd Banryu with speed and control
  • Exceptional human strength, endurance and close-combat instinct
  • Leading experienced mercenaries with distinct weapons and methods
  • Drawing additional power from the Shikon shard sustaining his revived body

Limits

  • Bankotsu's revived life depends on a Shikon shard that can be removed or purified.
  • Pride in direct combat encourages him to accept contests that serve an enemy's larger plan.
  • Trust in the band's shared code can keep him from recognising a member's self-interested betrayal early enough.

Aliases

Leader of the Band of Seven

Role

Young mercenary leader of the revived Band of Seven

Important relationships

  • Jakotsu is Bankotsu's most openly devoted comrade, treating their reunion as the restoration of a chosen family rather than a temporary contract.
  • Renkotsu respects Bankotsu's strength while calculating his own advantage, testing whether fear and history are enough to hold the band together.
  • Naraku revives and hires Bankotsu without offering equality, using the mercenary's loyalty and appetite for battle as cover for another objective.

Defining moments

  • Reclaiming Banryu reunites Bankotsu with the weapon that embodies his reputation and authority over the band.
  • Gathering the revived members under his command shows how quickly personal loyalty can rebuild a dangerous organisation.
  • Meeting Inuyasha in direct combat places extraordinary trained human strength against a half-demon whose power follows different rules.

Symbolism and visual design

Banryu is far larger than an ordinary human weapon, making Bankotsu's confidence and physical abnormality visible before he attacks.

The long braid and star-like forehead marking give a young face an immediately recognisable warrior silhouette.

A Jewel shard sustaining a dead mercenary turns borrowed life into a contract, linking renewed brotherhood to Naraku's manipulation.

Manga-versus-anime differences

The manga supplies Bankotsu's leadership, Banryu and central role in the Band of Seven arc. The television anime expands fights, conversations among the mercenaries and the route toward Mount Hakurei.

The arc belongs to the original 2000 television series rather than The Final Act. Takeshi Kusao voices Bankotsu in Japanese.
