Manga versus anime
The manga presents Kaien through Rukia's memory, allowing his warmth and death to explain her guilt without turning him into a flawless ideal. Aaroniero's later use of his appearance tests whether she can distinguish the person from a copied body and memories.
The anime expands everyday Squad 13 scenes and the Metastacia battle, giving more space to Kaien and Miyako before the tragedy. Toshihiko Seki voices Kaien in Japanese and also performs the familiar voice used through Aaroniero's disguise.
