Profile overview
Makizō is an unusual member of Squad 11 because survival instinct is more visible in him than hunger for combat. That makes him comic beside Kenpachi and Yachiru, but it also makes him useful. He notices disguises, understands when he is outmatched and keeps moving through a crisis rather than turning every encounter into a duel.
His rescue-arc role shows how alliances spread through imperfect choices. He does not help Orihime from immediate heroism: Uryū pressures him, Orihime resists leaving and Yachiru commandeers him. Even so, he carries an unconscious stranger to safety and remains involved when walking away would be easier.
Makizō Aramaki is the Tenth Seat of the Eleventh Division, commonly called Maki-Maki after Yachiru Kusajishi forgets his name. He encounters Uryū Ishida and Orihime Inoue while they are disguised as Soul Reapers and recognizes that they are intruders. Before the confrontation develops, Mayuri Kurotsuchi detonates members of Squad 12 whom he has turned into living bombs. Orihime's Santen Kesshun protects Makizō as well as her allies. Uryū then compels him to carry Orihime away from the battlefield. Makizō follows through, meets Yachiru and becomes the reluctant escort who brings Orihime into Squad 11's efforts to find Ichigo.

The nickname Maki-Maki reduces formal rank to Yachiru's playful language and fits Squad 11's loose internal hierarchy.
Carrying Orihime while stronger characters fight shows that rescue depends on unglamorous movement as well as spectacular victory.
Manga-versus-anime differences
The manga establishes Makizō during the Soul Society rescue arc as the Squad 11 officer saved from Mayuri's bomb trap who reluctantly escorts Orihime and meets Yachiru.
The television anime retains that role and later gives him extra material in anime-original stories, including the Bount arc and a joke involving Maki Ichinose's similar name. Those additions are not evidence of a manga Zanpakutō release. Chō, credited earlier as Yūichi Nagashima, voices Makizō in Japanese.
